What is the Difference Between Parenting Time and Custody?

Some states are starting to replace the term “custody” with the term “parenting time” to help improve with the negative connotations surrounding the word “custody.” Individuals may be put-off by the terms “sole custody”, “joint custody”, “physical custody” and so on. Now judges are beginning to award an allotted amount of “parenting time” to parents and then also allow joint decision making between the two individuals. In the states that have chosen to do this, this allows the judges to assign certain decision making responsibilities to a certain parent. For example, a mother may be the one who is in charge of the child’s healthcare, whereas the other parent may be in charge of making the educational decisions.
